Textiles

The Museum of the Rockies' textile collection, under the direction of Assistant Curator Margaret M. Woods, is one of the largest and most significant collections documenting the cultural, social, and economic life of early settlement and growth in the Northern Rockies region of the United States. The collection of over 4,000 items spans 100 years—from the 1850s to the 1960s—with the majority of the collection dating between 1880 and 1940, and is now available online at the textiles collection database.

The rich variety of items can be broadly defined to include clothing—men's, women's, children's, military, nursing, ritual, and western—accessories, household linens, rugs, quilts and bedspreads, and some interesting examples of tailored, ready-to-wear, and handmade textiles. The collection documents the stratification of society with objects from both affluent and less affluent households; objects worn and used for special occasions, as well as everyday items.

The Textile Collection is used extensively for in-house changing exhibits and made available to Montana State University-Bozeman students and interns for research projects. It is accessible to other researchers by prior appointment. For more information cotact Michael Fox at 994-5330 or at mfox@montana.edu.
