The Unwritten Story of Sacajawea from a Shoshone Perspective
Experience the Lewis and Clark Expedition through a tribal lens during a special evening with Randy’L Teton, an enrolled member of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes. Discover how she became the model for the U.S. Golden Dollar coin and the author of It’s Her Story: Sacajawea. Teton will share personal reflections and cultural insights into Sacajawea’s enduring legacy, offering a deeper understanding of the expedition’s impact from an Indigenous perspective.

Randy’L Teton, a member of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of the Fort Hall Reservation, was the official model for the U.S. Native American dollar coin featuring Sacajawea, released in 2000. She served as a Tribal Ambassador for the U.S. Mint, promoting Shoshone history and Sacajawea’s legacy.
Teton studied U.S. history, fine arts, Native American studies, and museum studies at the Institute of American Indian Arts, Fort Lewis College, and the University of New Mexico. She has curated several Native American exhibits and received numerous honors, including the Idaho Hometown Hero Medal and a Lifetime Achievement Award.
In 2023, she published her first children’s book, Her Story: Sacajawea, and is now working on a memoir. She enjoys spending time outdoors with her three children. Learn more at www.randylteton.com.
